Christos Giakoumopoulos visited Minsk
Christos Giakoumopoulos, Council of Europe Director General for Human Rights and the Rule of Law visited Minsk on December 19-20, 2017. Within the framework of the visit he had a meeting in Belarusian State University with the First Vice-Rector of the university Oleg Ivashkevich, Head of the International Relations Department Vadim Reznikov, Deputy Director of the Institute for retraining and qualification upgrading of judges, prosecutors and legal professionals Vladimir Moroz, Dean of the Faculty of International Relations Viktor Shadursky, Dean of the Faculty of Law Sergei Balashenko and Head of the Council of Europe Information Point in Minsk Larissa Lukina.
During the meeting, its participants discussed the issue of strengthening the contribution of the Council of Europe to improving students' knowledge in the field of international and European law, including through the realisation of the programme HELP (European programme for human rights education for legal professionals), as well as organisation of study visits to the Council of Europe in 2018. Moreover, current and future projects in the areas under consideration were discussed.
After the meeting, CoE Director General for Human Rights and the Rule of Law Christos Giakoumopoulos delivered a lecture to the students and staff of the Faculty of Law and Faculty of International Relations (BSU). The lecture was focused on the European Convention on Human Rights implementation (1950).
During the visit to Minsk Christos Giakoumopoulos took part in the international conference “Appeal in the criminal justice system: reality, trends and perspectives” organized by the Council of Europe and the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Belarus, and also held a number of meetings with the representatives of state authorities of the Republic of Belarus.
